A configuration management database (CMDB) is a database that stores and processes information about the configurations of IT services provided by an organization's IT department. ¨NBSP;The CMDB is based on a configuration model adopted by the organization that defines classes of configuration units with their possible characteristics. Typically, a CMDB contains the following data types:

  • Relationships between configuration units and other objects.

  • up-to-date information about IT service configurations
  • ;
  • increased efficiency of core ITSM practices and processes
  • ;
  • the ability to use data from the CMDB to assess the risks of configuration changes and their impact on the business.
