LeSS
Updated at: 24 January 2025
Large-Scale Scrum (LeSS) is an extension of the Scrum framework for managing complex software development projects involving multiple teams. It is a scalable version of Scrum that can be applied to product development with 2-8 Scrum teams or to organizations with hundreds of people. LeSS incorporates the core principles and practices of Scrum and extends them to cover larger projects and teams. LeSS provides a shared backlog, sprints, Scrum events (e.g. Sprint Review, Sprint Retrospective) and coordination mechanisms to ensure that all teams are aligned and creating value together. The system also includes a Component Product Owner role to manage cross-team dependencies and cross-team coordination.Large-Scale Scrum was developed by Craig Larman, a well-known author, consultant, and trainer in Agile software development, and Bas Vodde, a consultant and trainer specializing in Agile and Lean product development. Together they developed LeSS as a way to help organizations implement Scrum at scale and address the challenges of large and complex software development projects.
